Urgent Call for Action: Unsafe Road Conditions and Hazardous Parking in Knox Close and Surrounding Areas
Reported via desktop in the Surface Condition category anonymously at 11:11, Fri 16 August 2024
Sent to Northumberland County Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 6363868.
I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the deteriorating condition of the roads leading to and within Knox Close, NE22 5LH, including the adjacent streets of Melrose and Summerson Way. The state of these roads has become increasingly unacceptable, and the safety risks associated with them are now severe enough to demand immediate attention.
Over the years, I have endured the worsening disrepair of these roads, including significant potholes, cracks, and uneven surfaces. As a cyclist, I have narrowly avoided several accidents, and as a driver, I am constantly worried about the potential damage to my vehicle. Unfortunately, last week, my concerns materialised when the front coil spring of my car snapped after hitting one of the many uneven patches on the road. While I acknowledge that the poor road condition may not have been the sole cause, it has undoubtedly contributed over time to the wear and tear on my vehicle.
It is not just my own experience that reflects the seriousness of this issue. Every resident and visitor to this estate has commented on the appalling state of the roads. The lack of maintenance is having a cumulative impact, not only on vehicles but also on the community's overall safety.
Moreover, I must draw your attention to the increasingly hazardous situation caused by vehicles parking on pavements and at junctions throughout the estate. The junction at Knox Close is particularly concerning, with cars parked on both sides, severely restricting visibility. This problem is exacerbated near the barber shop, where vehicles are regularly parked on the bend, creating a dangerous blind spot. The potential for accidents in these areas is alarmingly high, especially for children and other vulnerable road users.
Given these issues, I strongly urge the council to take immediate action to resurface the roads in Knox Close and the surrounding areas. Residents have informed me that some have lived here for over 50 years, and they cannot recall the last time these roads were properly maintained. It is time for the council to allocate the necessary budget and resources to address this long-standing issue.
In addition to road resurfacing, I request that the council consider implementing measures to prevent vehicles from parking on pavements and at junctions, particularly at Knox Close and other critical points in the estate. The current situation is not only inconvenient but poses a significant safety risk that cannot be ignored.
I trust that you will treat this matter with the urgency it deserves and look forward to your prompt response and action.
