Since our recent telephone conversation re-the pavement arrangement on the east (Maltings) side of Hide Hill I have discussed the current situation with several elderly residents of the town and it would appear that the majority, especially those with mobility issues, avoid crossing the road where the curb arrangement requires a difficult / dangerous decent from footpath to road level. This limitation applies for something in the order of 75–80% of the east side pavement. Unfortunately, the curb arrangement is not the only problem for pedestrians wishing to cross the road. Realistically, the safest place to cross is at the top, Town Hall end, or at the very bottom, where anyone crossing faces a long and difficult transit with traffic coming up or down Hide Hill and vehicles, exiting Sandgate or Silver Street or coming into Hide Hill from Bridge Street. A busy and sometimes congested crossing with possible blind spots. May I therefore ask you to seek a review from county staff – safety highway and disability specialists to review the current layout and confirm that it is safe for all categories of users.
